Biography
American publisher of the Washington Post, one of the giants of the media industry. On 5 June 1940 she married Philip Graham, owner of the Post and they had one daughter and three sons. When her husband escaped his bi-polar distress with suicide in 1963, she took over the empire. Her platform remained a quest for journalistic excellence through the years and she was admired the world over for her courage and initiative, including the groundbreaking coverage of the Watergate scandal. Graham literally squared off against the Nixon White House as her paper exposed a series of scandals that had been perpetrated by the administration. Much of the credit for Nixon's resignation went to Graham and her editor, Benjamin Bradlee, and their reporters, Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein
While attending a business conference at Sun Valley, Idaho, she fell and suffered a head injury on 14 July 2001 and died three days later, 11:56 AM, at a hospital in Boise, ID, age 84.
She is survived by her son Donald Graham, chairman and CEO of The Washington Post Company; her daughter Lally Weymouth, a Washington Post and Newsweek journalist; her son Stephen Graham, a producer, philanthropist and doctoral student of English literature; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, and a sister, Ruth M. Epstein.
Her autobiography, "Personal History" won a Pulitzer Prize in 1998.
