Biography
Luxembourgish-American inventor, writer, editor, and magazine publisher, best known for publications including the first science fiction magazine. His contributions to the genre as publisher–although not as a writer–were so significant that, along with the novelists H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, he is sometimes called "The Father of Science Fiction". In his honour, annual awards presented at the World Science Fiction Convention are named the "Hugos".
He was the world's first radio-supply-house dealer. Highly intelligent and versatile, he designed the first home radio set.
Gernsback was educated in Luxembourg but moved to the U.S. when he was 20, where he became an editor of science magazines and the first of the science-fiction magazines. He founded "Amazing Stories" sci-fi mag in 1926.
He died at Roosevelt Hospital in New York City on 19 August 1967, aged 83.
