A Scottish political activist involved with the trade union movement in Clydeside, Gallacher was the first communist to be elected to the British House of Commons (1935-1950).
He was arrested and convicted of instigating a riot in connection with a 40 hour week demonstration in Glasgow in 1919, and sentenced to 5 months in prison. Subsequently, on the advice of Lenin, he rejected direct action in favour of parliamentary process. After several unsuccessful attempts to be elected to parliament, he was eventually elected in 1935 as the member for West Fife, holding the seat until defeat in 1950.
He was regarded as a man of courage, principle and integrity in his political struggles.
