After the attempted assassination of Adolf Hitler on 20 July 1944, Ernst was arrested and sentenced to two years in prison on 17 April 1945. The conspirators Carl Friedrich Goerdeler and Ludwig Beck had planned to appoint him as Secretary of State after the planned overthrow of Hitler. However, only a few days after his detention in Lehrter Straße cell prison, he was released on 25 April 1945 during the Battle of Berlin.
In 1948, Ernst was appointed head of the Berlin Monetary Commission which was instrumental in the preparation and implementation of the currency reform. From 1949 to 1957 he was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Berlin Central Bank. At the request of Konrad Adenauer, he took over the management of the Cabinet Committee on Business in 1951. From 1952 to 1958 he was chairman of the research advisory board for questions of the reunification of Germany. Every appointment of a member required his approval as chairman.
He died in Berlin on 28 November 1960, aged 71.
