Biography
German allegorical-symbolist and modernist painter who never aspired to realism in his art. He undertook several study trips, including to Capri, Rome and Naples, where he was inspired by classical role models in works on ancient themes. After these journeys he produced the paintings "The Golden Age", "The Siren Song", "The Young Man at a Crossroads", "The Night", "Birth of Venus", "Coronation of the Victor", "Last Paradise" (1899) and others.
He is also known for his illustrations in biographies and poetry anthologies written by other artists such as Houston Stewart Chamberlain, Engelbert Humperdinck and Eufemia von Adlersfeld-Ballestrem.
He died on 14 April 1941 in Düsseldorf-Kaiserswerth, aged 79.
