Biography
French documentary film maker. He studied stage design and did sets for the Follies Bergere. Franju collaborated with Henri Langlois on the film "La Metro" (1935) and in founding a film society and a short-lived film magazine.
In 1936, he established the Cinematheque Françoise and the only French National Film Archive. From 1949-1975, he made unique documentaries; both left-wing and surrealistic. His feature films, made mostly in the early 60's, combined realism with shock, as in "Les Yeux Sans Visage."
Franju later moved into TV work. He died November 5, 1987 in Paris, age 75.
