British leading tennis player of the late 1980s, one of the four greatest women tennis players in the world by January 1984, when she peaked. Durie first competed at Wimbledon in 1977 where she lost in the first round. During her 18 years on the professional circuit, she won seven national singles titles and reached number five in the world ranking. With her doubles partner, Jeremy Bates, she won at Wimbledon in 1987, at which time she was arguably the leading female tennis player in the UK, as well as taking the mixed doubles title at the 1991 Australian Open.
In 1995 after a final appearance at the Championships, Durie retired.
She went on to work for the BBC, and, with her former coach Alan Jones, supported the Cliff Richard Tennis Trail, dedicated to helping children develop their talents. She enjoys music, reading, films and skiing trips to Switzerland when possible. She is an enthusiastic supporter of Bristol City soccer club.
