Flemish writer, teacher, and from 1949 to 1971 director of BRT radio West Flanders. He was a member of the Royal Academy of Dutch Language and Literature and was awarded the Triennial State Prize in recognition of a writing career. His work encompassing all genres.
Demedts received the 1962 Award for Literature of the Flemish provinces for the living and the dead , and in 1976 for his entire oeuvre. In 1990 he got the Triennial State Prize for Literature for his entire writing career. In 1970 it was Andre Demedts Prize set to people or institutions who strive for the Great Dutch thought. Demedts sought here to the cultural integration between Flanders, the Netherlands and South Africa.
Demedts was primarily a committed writer, and from that commitment, he did not limit himself to writing poetry and prose. Demedts was not only a cultural promoter in his books, but especially the work he did as a speaker and essayist. In the course of several decades, he literally delivered thousands of lectures, at an average rate of one reading per week. He also put several projects on ropes that were contributing to the Flemish-Dutch integration.
He died 4 November 1992.
