Several of his more than 50 plays have been performed on the London and N.Y. stages and in theaters throughout the Western world. The family began a series of films in 1933 but separated after WW II. From 1940 he branched into film directing. Several of his films as director-actor-screenwriter were based on his own plays.
He made a third marriage in 1977. His daughter died in January 1960; his second wife died June 1961.
