Biography
Belgian Roman Catholic priest who gave his life to the care of lepers in a colony at Molokai, HI. He first moved to Hawaii as a residential priest but because of the difficulty in getting doctors, began to help. Stricken with leprosy in 1885, he died three years later, 4/15/1888. He was beatified summer of 1995 by Pope John Paul II, a preliminary step toward sainthood as declared by the Church.
