French physician specializing in obstetrics whose name is associated with l'utérus de Couvelaire ("Couvelaire uterus"), also called utero-placental apoplexy, which he described. Head of a clinic at Baudelocque, Hôpital Cochin, in 1901, he became its director in 1910. He was president of the Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology and returned to the National Academy of Medicine in 1926.
The son-in-law of Professor Adolphe Pinard, he replaced his father-in-law as Professor of childbirth clinic at the Faculty of Medicine in Paris in 1914. His son is the famous French surgeon Roger Couvelaire.
He died on 14 March 1948, aged 74.
