Biography
French philosopher known as the founder of sociology and of positivism. Comte gave the science of sociology its name and established the new subject in a systematic fashion.
His work was widely promulgated by Europe’s intellectuals and influenced the thinking of Karl Marx, John Stuart Mill, George Eliot and Michel Houellebecq.
Comte died of stomach cancer on 5 September 1857, Paris.
