French newsmaker, the first person to have a bilateral transplant of hands and forearms. The operation was carried out by Professor Jean-Michel Dubernard on 13 January 2000 in Lyon. In 1996, he lost both hands while handling a homemade rocket. Eight years after the intervention, the patient was able to resume a normal life and devote himself to the service of the handicapped. In February 2008, he published a book telling his story, "Je vis avec les mains d'un autre" (I live with the hands of another).
