Biography
French soprano who created numerous roles at the Opéra-Comique in the course of her career.
She was the daughter of French baritone and theatre director Auguste Louis Giraud. Her birth certificate states only her mother, Genny/Jenny Gabrielle Vaillant, as parent, and that Vaillant married Giraud on 10 April 1890, thus Marguerite was renamed Marguerite Caroline Giraud.
She made her stage debut in Nantes in 1899 as Mimì in La bohème, the same role in which she made her debut at the Opéra-Comique. She married Albert Carré, the director of the Opéra-Comique, in 1902. The couple divorced in 1924, but remarried in 1929. When Rosa Ponselle decided to add the role of Carmen to her repertoire, she studied with the Carré's for two months in 1935.
She died on 26 November 1947 at the age of 67 in Paris.
