Biography
German field marshal during World War II who commanded the 16th Army and later Army Group Centre. He was a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves (German: Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes mit Eichenlaub). The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross and its higher grade Oak Leaves was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or outstanding military leadership. He died in a prisoner of war camp in England on 17 July 1945 at age 60.
