Biography
French physician and surgeon, who performed a caesarean in 1851, a rare intervention at that time. He became chief surgeon at the hospice de la Charité de Lyon in 1840 and taught anatomy, physiology, surgery, and obstetrics. In 1849, he was professor of childbirth at L'École préparatoire de Medecine et de Pharmacie de Lyon, then professor of the Obstetric Clinic at the Faculty from 1877 to 1886, in which time he directed numerous theses.
Married twice, he was the father of seven children (his last son, Léon Bouchacourt, was a pioneer of radiology). He died on 6 October 1898, aged 86, in Lyon.
