American multiple murder suspect, alleged to be the spree killer who carried out a mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio, on 4 August 2019, at 1:05 AM. Ten people were killed, including him, and at least 27 others were injured. He was killed by police within 30 seconds of the first shots being fired. The shooter's 22-year-old sibling, trans man Jordan Cofer (born Megan Betts, 8 April 1997, Kettering, Dayton, OH), was among those killed.
Soon after the attack, law enforcement confirmed that the gunman was Connor Stephen Betts, a 24-year-old from Bellbrook, Ohio. During the day, police and the FBI began searching the shooter's home and found writings that showed interest in killing people. A preliminary assessment of the writings indicated no racial or political motive. On a Twitter account believed to be registered to Betts, he described himself as a leftist, anime fan, and metalhead, with posts that opposed Donald Trump and supported both Elizabeth Warren and socialism.
One classmate of Betts said he was bullied in high school and that he made a list of people at his school he wanted to kill in 2010 or 2011. The classmate said Betts had planned to shoot up the school. The notion of Betts being bullied was disputed by other classmates, who described him as a misogynist and a bully, reporting that he enjoyed scaring women while attending the school. According to law enforcement, Betts had no criminal record except for minor traffic offenses.
According to the authorities, the shooter had additional magazines with him, and was wearing body armor during the attack. According to the Dayton police, Betts ordered the semi-automatic gun that he used in the shooting online from Texas, and the gun was transferred to a local firearms dealer in Ohio, where Betts picked it up.
