French businessman, one of the richest men in Paris, he was accused of murdering his wife at her Paris home during World War II. The "Bernardy de Sigoyer affair" fascinated public opinion at the time. The trial began on 19 December 1946. Throughout the trial, Bernardy denied the crime, defending himself skillfully and stubbornly. His version of the murder involved his mistress Irene Lebeau, who he alleged killed his wife with a gun, but no bullet was found to support his version of the murder. Lebeau for her part claimed to have seen Bernardy strangle his wife in a red armchair in her bedroom, then to have helped her lover to transport the body to a warehouse. On 23 December 1946, Bernardy was sentenced to death, and Lebeau was acquitted. He was guillotined on 11 June 1947 in Paris at age 42.
