Biography
Indian lawyer and politician who served as the Chief Minister of West Bengal state from 1977 to 2000. He was one of the co-founders of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and a member of the Polit Bureau of the party since its inception in 1964 till 2008. He was noted to have been the longest serving chief minister in an elected democracy, at the time of his resignation.
Jyoti Basu married twice and had one child. He died of pneumonia on 17 January 2010 at 11:47 AM IST in Kolkata.
