Biography
American model and actress whose career started when she won the Miss California and Miss America beauty pageants in 1943. She won the talent (singing) and swimsuit awards at the national pageant. At 5 ft 8 in (1.73 m) tall, Bartel was the tallest pageant winner up to that time.
She sold more Series E bonds in 1943 than any other United States citizen, amounting to over $2.5 million. Eighty percent of those bonds were sold to women.
Notably she appeared as the female lead in the Broadway production of George Gershwin's Of Thee I Sing in 1952. On television, she starred in her own travel series, It's a Woman's World.
Bartel's husband predeceased her. She died in Brentwood, California, on 6 March 2011 at age 87.
