Biography
Scottish scientific engineer, inventor and businessman. He was a co-founder of Barr & Stroud, and invented the Barr & Stroud Rangefinder and other products mainly for military or medical use during the First Word War.
Barr was the Regius Professor of Civil Engineering and Mechanics at Glasgow University, a post he resigned in 1913 in order to concentrate on his pioneering optical engineering firm. In 1898 he successfully campaigned for a new Chair in Electrical Engineering at Glasgow University. In 1901 he raised £54,000 to build and equip the James Watt Engineering Building at Glasgow University.
He died in August 1931
