Italian astronomer remembered for his empirical law on planetary distances. He taught astronomy and celestial mechanics at Pisa (1920) and finally was assigned to the chair of astronomy in Rome (1922) where he was also assigned the direction of the Astronomical Observatory of Rome. As a mathematician, Armellini obtained interesting results in the theory of numbers and especially in the study of differential equations. He was also the author of many university textbooks. He died in Rome on 16 July 1958.
