Biography
Italian geographer and historian of geography and cartography, explorer and naturalist, who was part of the National Academy of the Lincei (from 1932), of the Italian Geographic Society (he was appointed president 1944-1945) and coordinator of the CNR Geography Committee. Following in the footsteps of his teacher Giuseppe Dalla Vedova, he was awarded the Geography Chair at the University of Padua (from 1911 to 1914) and later at the University of Rome (from 1915 to 1959). He was among the central editors of the Encyclopaedia Treccani from 1925 to 1937 when, being of Jewish origin, he was excluded from university education and from any other assignment following the issuance of Fascist racial laws. Pius XII took him to the Vatican Library, allowing him to continue and publish his studies.
He died in Rome on 13 May 1962, aged 77.
