Biography
Russian royalty, the Czar from1801-25, famed for his struggle with Napoleon. After first being defeated by Napoleon, they became allies, then enemies again when the French emperor invaded Russia in 1812. Russian troops captured Paris in 1914. At the Congress of Vienna; 1815, he founded a "holy alliance" for the preservation of peace and Russia gained possession of Finland and most of Poland.
Where Alexander began his reign with the inclination toward reformation, he ended up an extreme reactionary and a religious fanatic. One of his contemporary nicknames was "Sphinx of the North" as he learned to hide his feelings at an early age.
He was diagnosed with erysipelas in January 1824 and died 12/01/1825 NS at 10:50 AM at Taganrog of causes not entirely clear but thought to be liver disease followed by cerebral complications.
