Victoria
Caroline Beckham, born Victoria Caroline Adams to a
wealthy British family on April 17, 1974, is best known as Posh Spice of the 1990s British girl band the
Spice Girls.
She grew up in Hertford, with her parents, Jackie and Tony, and brother Christian
and sister Louise. Her parents ran a successful electrical wholesale business, but
the wealth that Beckham grew up with was more of an embarrassment to her than a
blessing. As a child she would ask her father not to drop her off in front of the
school so that no one would see her in the family’s Rolls-Royce.
Beckham played in a band in school and then went on the study drama at the Jason
Theater School and dance and modeling at the Laine Arts Theater College .
In 1996 Beckham saw an ad in the entertainment magazine The Stage that was looking for five women who could
sing and dance to form a group. She auditioned and even though she sung off-key (by
her admission), she was accepted into the group that later became known as the
Spice Girls.
The Spice Girls split up in 2000 to pursue
solo careers. In August of that year Beckham released her first single,
Out of Your Mind. She then went on
to release an autobiography called Learning
to Fly.
In September 2001 she released her first solo album
Not Such an Innocent Girl which reached
number 10 in the album charts. On February 11, 2002 she released her second and
final single, A Mind of Its Own that never
reached higher than its debut rating of number six on the charts.
By 2004 the media described Beckham’s music career as a failure after several
failed releases or attempts at releases. Despite this, somehow on September 5, 2006
eleven of Beckham’s previously recorded and unreleased songs were leaked online in
various music and fan forums.
By February 26, 2006 Beckham made it known that she had no plans to pursue a
singing career, unless it had anything to do with the Spice Girls. In September of that year Beckham
launched her own jeans label.
On October 30, 2006 she published her second book, a non-fiction fashion book
called That Extra Half an Inch: Hair, Heels and
Everything In Between. It was co-written by contributing editor of
Vogue, Hadley Freeman.
Victoria has been married to ex Real Madrid football player,
David Beckham, since July 4,
1999. The couple has become known as the ’s golden couple even though there
were some accusations from women in the tabloid press in 2004 who claimed to
have had affairs with David. All accusations of affairs were dismissed by
David although no legal action was taken against the women.
Beckham and husband have received much press throughout the Summer and Fall of
2006, as the new-best-friends of super couple, Tom
Cruise and Katie
Holmes.
During
this hectic period David was offered a multi-million dollar contract to sign with
L.A. Galaxy, and it was confirmed on 11 January 2007 that David Beckham would be leaving Real Madrid to
join the MLS team in Los Angeles on a 5 year deal worth as much as $250 million
that will see Beckham earn up to $10 million a year in direct salary. After he
accpeted the offer he duly arrived in L.A. in July 2007 among a huge press and
media frenzie. Sadly the coulpe's popularity was not to be as high profile as had
orignially been expected and Mrs Beckham found herself 'fair prey' to the cruelty
of the American press.
Victoria
and David Beckham have three sons
together: Brooklyn Joseph (born March 4, 1999), Romeo James (born September 1,
2002), and Cruz David (born February 20, 2005).
